Route: Wilkinson Road, unknown trail, (Province Mountain), unknown trail, Wilkinson Road

My third hike of the day was Province Mountain. As I drove to it, I considered skipping it and coming back another day, as clouds were darkening things. Without and rain or thunder in sight, I decided to check it out.

After heading past a bunch of cottages on Butter Field Road, I was soon at the gate, where I pulled over and parked on the side of the road. From there, it was a few minutes of roadwalking, soon arriving at the trailhead (a cairn up on the embankment on the second curve).

The trail started off fairly gradually, soon passing a granite marker signifying the Maine-New Hampshire border. While I had a deer fly bugging me, it wasn't much of a problem on much of the trail, as the low canopy likely deterred it. Not much longer after, I was passing through a somewhat recent logging cut, and then ascending to the summit of Province Mountain.

Despite the clouds, the views were excellent - Province Lake and Green Mountain straight ahead and the Sandwich Range and Ossipees not too much further. There was another viewpoint on a back ledge, looking toward points to the south and southwest. In addition, there were good blueberries on this back ledge (the ones up above were a bit tart).

All in all, not a bad little hike. I'd like to check this out on a nicer day and see what the views are like with better visibility.

Directions to trailhead: Take Route 153 North from Wakefield to Province Lake. Shortly after seeing the lake, Butterfield Road will be on the right. Head up this road (it will become Wilkinson Road), past the cottages, up to a gate. Park here (not blocking the gate), and continue up the road, around a curve, then while rounding a second curve, the trailhead is marked with a cairn on the right.
