About

Negus Mountain
Rowe, MA, and Charlemont, MA

Trailheads, measurements, times, distances, and maps are all approximate and relative to the hike(s) as shown below.

Looking southwest down the trail toward Zoar Gap as a train passes (not quite visible)

Having vowed not to hike this mountain in the winter without crampons about five days ago, I decided to hike Negus in the winter without crampons again. The weather was a bit nicer on this day - about 30 degrees and not too windy. While there was a little bit more snow on the ground, a some of the ice had melted. Nonetheless, there was a lot of black ice on the ledges, making for a few falls on my part.

The footprints made it pretty obvious that, with the exception of a few rabbits, we were the first ones on the trail since I soloed it a few days before. This hike is a true gem and I hope it doesn't become overly popular anytime soon.

Looking southeast down the Deerfield River valley

Directions to trailhead: Take Zoar Road to Zoar Gap. Parking is available on both sides of the road. Walk down the dead end road with the yellow fence at the end, cross the railroad tracks - the trailhead should be right there.
