Bushwhacking over the false peak of Melvin Hill
Route: Prescott Hill Road, logging road, bushwhack
Melvin Hill in Gile State Forest in Springfield (not to be confused with Melvin Mountain southeast of Cardigan).
We started on foot on the gated Prescott Hill Road (off Old Grafton Road), which was mostly dry (and driveable). We left the road just before the second bridged brook crossing and followed an old logging road southeast (sort of a herd path worn into it in places), keeping with it almost all the way to the ridge, crossing over a stonewall just prior to reaching the col. From there, we headed north-northeast up to the false summit (some directional views from the southern ledges), the headed over to the true summit, where we encountered a dusting of snow on the north slope. A few directional views from near the summit, including Sunapee, Kearsarge, and Cardigan (there's an old trimmed out viewpoint north of the summit).
Nice peak with generally open woods. I've been looking at this one in the distance from Cardigan for a long time...nice to finally check it out.

Directions to trailhead: From Wilmot, take US 4A northwest, then take a right onto Old Grafton Road. Prescott Hill Road will soon be on the right. There is no parking in the vicinity of the gate.
