Gorham, NH, Shelburne, NH, Bean's Purchase, NH Trailheads, measurements, times, distances, and maps are all approximate and relative to the hike(s) as shown below. ![]() Looking down the Carter Moriah Trail on the way to Mt. Surprise Though a bit smokey from the wildfires in Quebec and quite hot, the afternoon weather was fairly decent. Starting at Bangor Street, I was able make decent time to Mt. Surprise, where I had hazy views of the Presidentials. Other than a few mosquitoes and deer flies, the bugs weren't too bad. Beyond Mt. Surprise, the rougher footing on the trail, as well as some wet ledges (and a few small patches of mud and snow), slowed me a bit. It also seems that there's a new up-and-down on this section of trail every time I hike it. Nonetheless, I eventually made it to the summit of Mt. Moriah, where I had hazy views of the Presidentials, Evans Notch peaks, and Mahoosucs. After a brief break (being hurried by the black flies), I turned around and descended, making it back to Bangor Street well before sunset.
