Waterville Valley, NH Trailheads, measurements, times, distances, and maps are all approximate and relative to the hike(s) as shown below. ![]() Looking up the south slide With enough time for a morning/early afternoon hike prior to Turkey Day dinner, I decided to head over to Waterville Valley and take advantage of snow/ice free slides. Unfortunately, due to some damp weather a day earlier, things were a bit wet - having been up the north slide in questionable conditions twice in recent months, I decided to take a pass and instead ascend the generally tamer south slide. Reaching the south slide, I was pleased to see that I was climbing out of the valley clouds into a nice undercast - particularly striking was the Lakes Region. Other than one slabby area, the ascent up the south slide wasn't too bad despite the wet conditions. After reaching the (as far as I can tell) viewless summit (I've never taken the time to find the rumored small vista near the summit), I continued over to Middle Tripyramid for some more undercast views. The Sandwich Dome, Tecumseh, the Osceolas, and Moosilauke all looked like islands standing upon a sea of clouds. After a short snack break, I continued to North Tripyramid, where I had some undercast views to the north. The Presidentials were in the clear - a bit surprising considering the forecast. For the descent, I headed down the steep, slippery, and rough Pine Bend Brook Trail, then connected to the more gentle Scaur Ridge Trail. Upon reaching the portion where the trail starts to jog westward, I dropped down the embankment and connected to an old logging road, leading to the Livermore/Tripyramid junction, where I continued on the long roadwalk back.
