Route: Pike Hill Road, Plymouth Mountain Trail, (Plymouth Mountain), Sutherland Trail, herd path, Plymouth Mountain Trail, Pike Hill Road

With clouds looming over the Lakes Region, I decided to head a bit northwest to clear skies.

Starting on the road walk portion of the hike, I soon saw the faded trailhead sign and headed down a hill, across a brook, and then back up. Tall grass, weeds, and prickers. Mud. What a mess.

This mess didn't let up until almost halfway up the trail. The upper portion of the trail was a bit beat up and surely not heavily travelled. Arriving at the viewless summit, I decided to follow the 'Outlook' spur trail then call it a day, disappointed. Once I reached the outlook, however, I was pleasantly surprised - excellent views of the Ossipees and decent views of the Sandwich Range and Franconia Notch areas.

Back at the summit, I followed a short path to an obstructed Mt. Cardigan outlook - nothing special.

One thing is sure - I'm glad I wore pants instead of shorts! The lower portion of this hike was a mess!

Directions to trailhead: Take Route 3A North from Bristol. Near the northern end of Newfound Lake, take a right onto Pike Hill Road (opposite North Shore Road). After a few minutes, and shortly after passing a house on the left, there is a small grass roadside parallel parking area on the left (concealed 'TRPK' sign). Walk up the road, bearing right at the junction immediately past the parking area. The Plymouth Trail starts at the beginning of a field on the right a few minutes past this junction.
