The Past
Mt. Institute Before Skiing
Horace Mann (1796-1859) was a well known politician and educator. Why does this have anything to do with Berkshire East Ski Area? While working in Charlemont, Mann looked across the Deerfield River and saw a mountain and proclaimed it "Mt. Institute."
Decades later, Arthur Parker saw Mt. Institute when arriving in Charlemont on a ski train (destination: Chickley Alps). With the alpine skiing craze starting to hit the post-World War II United States, Parker decided he would try opening a ski area on this mountain. |
