About

Mt. Tom, Mt. Field (West Peak)
Bethlehem, NH

Trailheads, measurements, times, distances, and maps are all approximate and relative to the hike(s) as shown below.
A little bit of everything on the A-Z Trail
A little bit of everything on the A-Z Trail

Route: Zealand Trail, A-Z Trail, Mt. Tom Spur, (Mt. Tom), Mt. Tom Spur, Willey Range Trail, bushwhack, (West Field), bushwhack, logging road, A-Z Trail, Zealand Trail

Zealand Trail to A-Z junction was snow free and fairly dry.

A-Z Trail was terrible. Not too bad in hardwoods, however snow started at 3,000' and continued until reaching the ascent to the col. Also, lots of pooled/running water areas, some deep. Some deep mud as well. Ascent up to col, and then Mt. Tom Spur had minimal small patches of snow/ice - barebootable.

Headed up Willey Range Trail from there - lingering monorail, but barebootable up to about 3,950', where we bushwhacked down to the ridge. Generally bare ground with smaller patches until we neared the col, then about a foot of snow from there to maybe 3,400', where the snow increased to about 2 feet, with drifts up to 4 feet and lots of spruce traps. Probably would have been better with snowshoes, though not by much. Generally open woods until the last little bit to West Field recognized summit.

Decided to try to drop off northwest - mistake. Snow still a good 2-3 feet deep with deeper drifts heading off West Field, until maybe 3,300 feet, where it became a little bit more patchy, but still 1-2 feet deep. Ended up taking the very muddy old logging road back to A-Z.
