Jackson, NH Trailheads, measurements, times, distances, and maps are all approximate and relative to the hike(s) as shown below. ![]() The East Pasture XC Ski Trail Deciding to check out some new-to-me terrain, I headed up to Jackson to try a different approach to Black Mountain. The East Pasture Trail was surprisingly pleasant - basically a nice grassy road walk almost all of the way. Other than a short muddy stretch after the Great Brook crossing, the trail was dry. Grades were pleasant almost all of the way up, with the steepest part being the short uphill just before the the summit - I couldn't help but jog some of it. All brook crossings of any size were crossed on wooden bridges. The views from the Middle Peak of Black Mountain were a let down - having previously visited in winter, I was disappointed with the subpar views. Though Mount Washington and Carter Notch could be seen through narrow openings in trees, there really wasn't much to see. Perhaps the best viewpoint of the entire day was at the 1 KM marker of the East Pasture Trail, looking across a meadow at the Doubleheads. Nonetheless, it was a nice walk, probably just under 5 miles roundtrip.
