Looking up the trail to Great Hill
Seeing some clearer areas northwest of town, I decided to do a sunset hike in the rain to the Great Hill firetower. Greeting me at the parking lot were a dozen deer flies - despite running all the way to the tower, the deer flies kept up with me - very vexing. Fortunately, they must be scared of heights, as they didn't follow me above the first flight of stairs.
While areas to the east and south were socked in, the west and northwest were somewhat clear - good news for seeing a sunset! Despite the rain, I was able to stay fairly dry, thanks to the fire tower roof over my head.
Sure enough, as I descended after the sun set, the deer flies found me one by one, resulting in a very annoying run back to the parking area.
