The Wentworth Trail
Route: Wentworth Trail
Was thinking this would be a quick afternoon stroll, but that all changed when I discovered no one had been up here since last week's storm. There was a foot or so of snow on top of the previous footbed, with a crust on top, making for snow going.
The trail now has a nice footbed for snowshoeing (though a moose attempted to posthole part of it whilst I was up on the summit). Microspiking this right now would be a foolhardy endeavor, as the broken trail was a sugar snow that wouldn't set up overnight. In addition, there are some areas of deep snowpack up on the ridge that would result in epic postholing without snowshoes.
I also broke out the herdpath from the summit cairn to the fantastic eastern ledges, where you can see Red Hill, the Belknaps, the Ossipees, Pleasant Mountain in Maine, Chocorua, Tripyramids, etc.
