Looking down one of the ski trails
Route: Ski trails, unnamed path
Mt. Oscar, also known as the West Mountain area at Bretton Woods. The summit ledges are just behind the ski area (this time of year, you can sit on the ledges and never know you're next to a ski area) and feature commanding views toward Zealand Notch, as well Mt. Hale and the Sugarloaves. Presidential views attainable from nearby ski trails.
Ascended almost directly up the West Mountain area on ski trails. It's not as steep as other ski trails in the Whites, so it was smooth sailing (especially since it's been mowed this fall). There are also marked hiking trails that correspond with ski trails, as well as one that stays in the woods a bit more.
Very nice foliage walking up the ski trails, as well as in some areas directly below the peak. Zealand Notch looked to be past peak. On the drive up, the area immediately north of Franconia Notch (ie the slopes of Scarface Mountain) was spectacular in terms of foliage.
