Mt. Institute, better known as Thunder Mountain or Berkshire East, is a steep but rewarding climb from Charlemont. Though the 1,538 foot summit only offers an unobstructed view to the west, there are lookouts to the north, northwest, and southwest within five minutes of the top.

Horace Mann named the mountain while working across the river from it in Charlemont.
